Journey of Packaging Design

Everyone of us has either played or seen a game of badminton at least once in our life. It is a sport that requires precision and judgement with the two equipments that are used to play this game, i.e. Racket and Shuttle. Shuttles are very critical in a badminton match, slit tilt of a feather and the whole direction/speed of the shot will change. This is the reason why packaging of a shuttle is very important. Firstly, the process of manufacturing shuttles was understood in order to know what material they are made up off and what are the other external factors that need to be taken care of while designing the packaging.

Feather shuttles are made out of Goose/Duck feathers and cork with a leather wrap

Alignment of feathers by keeping the feather side up is done in a cup

Sorting of feathers is done using a machine (26 machines to check different parameters)

Checking the feather angles and stability using miniature wind tunnel and then apply glue around the interior of feathers.

Each shuttle must have exactly 16 feather of the same length. Punch 16 holes on the circumference of the cork.

Tips are made out of cork, synthetic foam and white leather

They are then placed in a swing machine to bind securely together with two strings for strength.

Final testing with the help of an automatic racket and the final glue application is done on the threads for locking them in place.

Colour strips attached on top to indicate the spreed of shuttle (green, blue, red)

Problem identification

Opening of lid is difficult as it is very tight

Removing of the last shuttle is difficult

Removing/dispensing of the last 2/3 shuttles from the long tube

Humidifying

Multiple shuttles dispensing at the same time

Identifying the number of shuttles left

Problem statement

To design an aesthetic packaging of shuttles for badminton players who regularly practice and face the following problems: handling such a long tube, identifying the number of shuttles left, opening the lid and separately humidifying the shuttles before practice.
